Wellness Visions with Connection to Wellness

What is wellness?

The world health organization defines wellness as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity1. Wellness is about cultivating a fulfilling, positive, and holistic life. This can be an ever-changing process as we grow and encounter new life challenges. This all-encompassing outlook on our life (mental, physical, social, spiritual) can be broken down into many aspects of daily life: exercise, social interactions, relationships, work, family, nutrition, sleep, etc. Wellness is about identifying areas of our own life that are in need of further development to achieve a well-rounded and higher quality of life.

How can a wellness coach help?

In our premium content, Mayo Clinic trained wellness coach Aleisha guides members through creating their own wellness vision and prompts for next steps. This wellness vision looks different to each individual– it is about taking the time to focus on what your ideal life looks like. This could be certain activities that bring you joy, a balanced life, or a certain feeling/emotion. Envisioning this ideal version of your life can lay the groundwork of what areas to work on to achieve your wellness vision and balanced life.

Wellness coaches like Aleisha help clients in findings their version of wellness by asking questions to help you come to your own conclusions and zero in on what you really want for a well-rounded, thriving life. A study conducted by Mayo clinic showed that after 12 weeks, quality of life improved in all areas measured (physical, cognitive, social, emotional, spiritual, depression and stress) and was maintained in participants 24 week follow up2.

Wellness coaches also act as accountability partners as you work on yourself to develop tools and progress towards your wellness goals. A coach can be helpful to guide you through changes and ask questions to help shift your goals as your needs change over time. They help you keep positive forward momentum towards your goals and can also explore education options if warranted. Their job is to help you find your own conclusions and act as a neutral partner and supporter. You are the expert of your life and what you want it to look like, and having someone to talk to can help you reach conclusions, support you in changes you want to make, and be your cheerleader towards living your best life.

Here is a list of some example questions that a wellness coach might ask to help you form your wellness vision.

Typical questions asked when thinking of your wellness vision/state of wellness.

To start, picture the best self/thriving version of self

·         What are you doing?

·         Who are you with?

·         How do you feel?

·         What’s energizing you?

These questions help create a meaningful wellness vision that taps into your ‘why’. Having a meaningful reason ‘why’ helps fuel change and set a clear goal to work towards as you make changes in your life.
